Allergies in Pets

Allergy season has arrived! For humans and pets alike, the release of different pollens and allergens in the environment can make for an uncomfortable few weeks as our bodies adjust. Aside from environmental allergies, there are other things in your pet’s life that may be causing an uncomfortable allergic reaction. Read on to learn more about the allergens potentially affecting your pet and some natural remedies.

Seasonal Allergies

Just like humans, our pets may suffer from allergies to increased pollen. As the beautiful spring flowers and trees bloom, they release particles into the air that can cause irritation to your pet’s respiratory system. Unlike humans, our pets are much closer to the ground and can pick up seasonal allergens by walking through the grass and sniffing all around.

To protect your pet against seasonal allergies, make sure to rinse their paws after spending time outdoors and try to keep them away from high-pollen areas, such as flower beds or area with tall grass. Also avoid going for walks in the early morning or late afternoon when pollen levels are at their peak. Speak with your veterinarian about potential medical remedies if your pet suffers from severe seasonal allergies.

Environmental

As we spend more time outdoors, it is important to be conscious of the types of products we are using to maintain our homes and gardens. Many sprays for weeds and grass contain harsh chemicals that may irritate your pets. Pesticide treatments are commonly used to keep yards looking fresh and green throughout the season, but these can be harmful to pets who are often walking through and rolling around in the grass.

Natural and DIY pesticides can be effective at reducing the presence of harmful critters while keeping you and your pet safe. Try options such as vegetable oil spray, soap pray, garlic spray, Neem leaf, and eucalyptus oil1.

Food Allergies

Pets are prone to food allergies. Ingredients that are commonly known for causing allergies in pets include lamb, beef, chicken, eggs, soy or gluten, or preservatives. Over feeding your pet the same protein for years on end could lead them to develop an allergy to that particular protein2. For example, if you feed your dog only chicken product from puppyhood to adulthood, you may eventually see an allergy to chicken develop. It is recommended that you rotate the proteins in your pet’s diet to avoid developing an allergy.

Additives and preservatives that are in pet foods can also lead to an allergic reaction. Avoid this by feeding your pet more wholesome, real foods to avoid preservatives. For ideas on how to incorporate more real and raw foods into your pet’s diet without breaking the bank, check out this blog! Another way to avoid potential allergens is by eliminating foods that are commonly known to cause reactions. Eliminate grains, gluten, and other inflammatory foods in a step-by-step process if your pet is having an allergic reaction to an unknown allergen. Of course, make sure any dietary changes are overseen by your veterinarian.

Our pets are similar to humans in the way that they are capable of developing allergies. Their immune systems work to protect them by fighting against pollutants and allergens. To keep your pet feeling their best, try some of the suggestions above and speak with your veterinarian about other holistic options.
